Pamilacan Island is ideal for travelers who want a quieter and more complete island hopping day in Bohol. It is less famous than Balicasag, but that is part of its appeal: fewer boats, a calmer rhythm, snorkeling around the island, frequent turtle sightings, dolphin watching in the open sea and time to experience a real fishing community.
We set off early, as this is when the sea is usually at its calmest. During the crossing from Panglao, there are good chances of spotting dolphins in the wild and, at certain times of the year, other marine species migrating through this area.
It’s not a staged experience and it can’t be guaranteed; but when it happens, it’s one of those moments that makes the early wake-up unquestionably worth it.
Upon arrival in Pamilacan, we snorkel at two spots selected by local guides based on the day’s conditions. Coral reefs, tropical fish, and very often turtles.
Snorkeling is relaxed and adapted to sea conditions, with enough time to enjoy each spot properly.
After snorkeling, we have lunch at a local restaurant. Pamilacan is a fishing island, so the food is usually simple and fresh; catch of the day when available, along with options such as chicken or pork.
Eating here; on a white-sand beach; is very much part of the experience.
Before heading back, we take a guided walk around the island. It’s a good moment to understand how the local community lives, how water and electricity are managed, and to see a few remnants of the colonial period, such as the Spanish watchtower that still stands.
